Artist's Statement |
My first priority in painting is to capture the mood of the place or objects that I'm painting. I've learned that it's often necessary to sacrifice details to preserve the mood of a piece. Indeed, I've learned that what you leave out of a painting is as important as what you leave in. Most of the time, I find that the mood is determined by the light that is present. So I'm always studing the qualities of light. Because of this, I'm hopelessly addicted to painting outdoors, or "plein air." Plein air painting is the ultimate painting challenge where the painter must deal with weather conditions, complex landscapes, pests of all kinds, and an ever-changing sky in order to capture the essence of a scene. It is a wonderful combination of creative activity and the great outdoors. Sunscreen, bug spray, and peanut butter sandwiches are all necessary for a successful plein air painting experience. |
Lord, I thank You for making me an artist, for it brings joy to my life and I hope to those around me. Help me to use the talent that you have seen fit to give me to capture the beauty of Your world and the people in it. Help me to remember that the work I create is an expression of Your love for me and for everyone who views it. Lord, I give my work as an artist to You for Your greater glory. Amen. |
